About Me

I (Jason) am a nature photographer based in Athens, Georgia.  My wife, Rachel and I, travel the world seeking nature’s wonders.  Rachel is the web designer, business manager, gallery designer, photography assistant, and an amazing travel companion.  In addition to being passionate about beautiful images, we’re both self-described nature geeks.  Rachel is trained as a horticulturalist, and I’m an avid birder.  Rachel and I often travel and backpack in the southern Appalachians from North Georgia to the Smoky Mountains.  We travel to the Western US quite often, and I’ve had the privilege to travel throughout the world to every continent except Australia, with many trips to Africa and Central and South America.  Alaska holds a special place in our hearts, and I have literally lost count of the number of times I’ve visited.

As an artist, I believe that contrary to popular opinion, art should not be primarily self expression.  It is rather a reflection of the world around us.  Art is not a private experience confined to one’s view of themselves.  It is, rather, an experience that we share as artists and viewers in community and society, so the art should reflect what the artist sees, experiences, and wishes to share with the viewer.  The artists’ vision enables them to share something outside and bigger than themselves.  Photography is a perfect medium to reflect the natural world.  I believe that we as humans share the experience of profound reactions to what we see in nature.  We can all think of times in our lives when we saw a particularly grand or moving sight or perhaps found solace in a sunrise or in the visit of a bird to the nearest branch.  I see these moments often, and I want to share what I have been given with you.  Yes, this art is personal in that it involves what and how I see things, but it is a reflection of something we can all see and share, not my simply self-expression.  For me, nature is a profound gift from God that He uses to teach me, comfort me, and often simply awe me.  In my photography, I seek to reflect the precious gift we’ve all been given as humans of the natural world.  It’s our responsibility to protect, preserve, and cherish it, and I hope that my art inspires you to do just that.

It is my hope that some of you would invite my images into your home.  The art we use to adorn our walls is a powerful thing.  I know that my wife and I have sought to make our home a place of rest and refuge for ourselves, and we also want our guests to feel cozy and to see beauty in our home.  If my images can help add beauty to your everyday life and make your home a more lovely place, I am honored that you would choose my images for such an important place in your life.  Thank you!
